Notes
From the 20th Anniversary CD:
Written about trying to get through a really hellacious day, and surviving the stress of everyday life. I really wanted the tone of the opening guitars to say it all. The unique, crunchy rhythm guitar sound took hours to dial in, but it infused the vibe of the song with boundless energy, energy we needed to bring this song to its climax, the outro. It took a few sessions spread out over a few months, and a few studios to work out the performances. Ultimately, I decided to record a “worked out,” fully composed guitar solo for this song, and actually used a little handheld amp called a Rockman for the smooth tone. There must be eight guitars playing in harmony by the outro, a super melodic electric guitar orchestra, but still rockin’.
From the Anthology:
CRUSHING DAY: One ot my favorite guitar tones starts this song off. I remember the night at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco, John suggested that we triple track the rhythm guitars and got this wicked tone with his special mic technique. Its sound introduces the meaning behind the song perfectly. This recording has one of the very few solos that I worked out before going into the studio. I just felt the style of the piece demanded a little more than an improvised one, so, I worked out a long sprawling, all encompassing thing from top to bottom. It's probably one of the more technically demanding solos I've ever written.
