Notes
From the Anthology CD:
NOT OF THIS EARTH: The opening chords define me, and my unusual approach to harmony. This song, which was the lead track on my first CD with Relativity, was recorded in '85 with both the intent to state my own view of instrumental rock guitar music, and to send a humorous "hello" to some long lost high school friends. The title of the song is also the title of a '60s era sci-fi B movie my friends and I had memorized for its unintentional comic effect. It's a song about a mysterious traveler from another planet as well. Pitch access theory, the compositional technique I learned from my high school music theory teacher Bill Westcott, is applied to this song as the main "hook"; different key signatures revolving around one tonal center, one bass note. Jeff and John created an otherworldly drum sound using non-linear reverb to complete the spacey but aggressive vi be of the track.
