Notes

From the 20th Anniversary CD: I wrote “Satch Boogie” while in a neck brace, holed up in my Berkeley apartment, recovering from a minor car accident. I was trying to get my guitar to sound, or, more importantly, act like a swing band horn section with a Gene Krupa-like drummer completing the ensemble sound. I asked drummer Jeff Campitelli to come up with a performance that was a balance of a drum set falling down a flight of stairs, and full throttle rockin’ swing. His playing propels the track, even during the breakdown section where John Cuniberti processed his kit through some non-linear reverb. Jeff’s swing is so deep, so rockin’, you can’t help but want to play all over it. From Anthology: SATCH BOOGIE: I wrote this song while recovering tram a case of whiplash. In a neck brace and properly medicated, I imagined swing drummer Gene Krupa playing his kit and falling down the stairs simultaneously, but keeping his swing going all the while. Once I had that image in mind, finishing the composition was easy. In the studio John got such a great guitar sound for me, I really felt free to boogie, full tilt! Jeff's drum performance is classic! The title came from fellow guitarist and good friend John Riccio. Back in our high school days he used to call all my little boogie songs "Satch Boogie 1,· "Satch Boogie 2" and so on. This time it really seemed to fit.
