From the Anthology:
THE EXTREMIST: This started out as an idea for a Gap commercial. An ad agency had asked me to work up two pieces of music to be applied to video images depicting a biker and a ballerina, separately and then together. Jeff and I were in the studio working on the "Flying ... • album at the time, so, during a break we kicked out this rock riff I thought would fit the biker character. lucky for me they thought it was all too heavy for the commercial, which meant I got to keep my cool little riff! Two years later I had turned it up a notch and finished writing it so it would become the title track for my 1992 release. Andy helped me get a ripping harmonica tone using an old Fender Vibroverb. I felt like Robert Plant on "When the levee Breaks" when we recorded it!
